Madness,Madness, They Call it Madness

Whilst the title gives my age away it also draws attention to the fact that the 2016 series of Midweek MTB Madness is underway, having kicked off on Wednesday evening at Leverhulme Park, Bolton. Typically the weather was damp and dark (certainly dark from a photographers PoV at least) but the action was unrelenting and frenetic from the gun. The course was bereft of the infamous river crossing that had given plenty of riders an early bath in previous editions but there were enough twists and turns and ups and downs to test the competitors and many of them appeared to be in a whole world of pain as they crossed the line in fading light.

Men’s winner was Will Lewis repeating his success from just three days earlier at Crank It. In his now typical style he made the escape from the start never to be seen again by the chasing pack. The undulations of the course were of no obstacle to Lewis’s progress and he has to be a firm favourite for the overall series even at this early stage. Andrew Lindley and Christian Smith rounded out the podium.

The women’s event was shaping up to be a much closer affair with a fascinating early tussle between Becky Preece and Martha Gill. These two were going head to head for the first few laps despite the fact that Gill took a tumble on lap one. Preece eventually forged ahead as Gill appeared to be struggling to catch her breath  finally finishing third behind winner Preece and second place Alison Rushton. A fully fit Gill will push Preece in future rounds and this will be an interesting battle to follow.

Also a big Shootthebikerace shout out to Sarah Grimshaw from Horwich CC. The only woman to compete both here and at last Sunday’s Crank It. She smiled her way around to be last competitor on the course (far from last place however due to the quirks of the rules where nobody does another lap once the winner has crossed the line) It’s competitors like Sarah who put the heartbeat into the scene and her endeavour and commitment is as good as anybody’s once the gun goes off.

A major part of the Madness evenings is also the Go Ride events. These are a great first step into the MTB world for the kids and the aim is to nurture them going forwards and who knows to produce the champions of tomorrow. There is a lot of time and effort involved in setting these events up and they are an integrel and important part of the whole event.

Finally praise goes to organiser Mick Speirs of Horwich CC alongside Karen Long and the team for another superbly organised and managed event, to Rob Allen for providing the spectacular and unique start gate as well as other sterling tasks that keep the event running smoothly, to the paramedics and mountain resue teams for being on standby and of course all the riders and their families who turned out on a miserable school night to make this a great event

So round one is done and another four to go. From a photographers perspective I can only pray for better weather and more daylight to do justice to the spectacle that is Midweek MTB Madness.

Lewis Cranks It Up

Sunday saw the first race in the Crank It MTB series at Clayton Vale by the National Cycling Centre, an excellent venue with some testing trails to sort the field out.

Turn out was modest. The organisation by Jack Humphreys and his crew, and also the quality of the course did deserve better, but the ones who competed gave glowing reports of the quality of the event

The heavy rain which started the minute the race did and finished as the chequered flag dropped left some of the rockier parts a bit treacherous under wheel and several of the riders did struggle to get to grips with the conditions

Out on the course a fine win was taken by youngster Will Lewis riding for High Peak Cycles. He stormed off into an early lead and made light work of the conditions. Pre race favourites Giles Drake and Chris Lever were always off Lewis’s pace although I wrongly assumed that as these two pushed each other on he would be reeled in. Drakes chances were finally scuppered when he punctured at half way leaving Lever to chase alone and in vain. Lewis kept his head and ploughed on relentlessly and Lever showed no sign of making the catch.

Riders came in caked head to toe in Mancunian mud, illustrating just how heavy the course was but these are hard folk and I am sure many of them will be back and ready for action at round one of the Midweek MTB Madness at Leverhulme Park on Wednesday

It’s Tough on the Streets

Sunday saw the return of the prestigious Lincoln Grand Prix, the final round in British Cycling’s Spring Cup and for the first time there was also a womens race . Shootthebikerace kept a close eye on proceedings in both events and particularly the performance of the four girls making up the Sunsport Velo WRT. This is a major event in the British Cycling calendar and a good step forward in Sunsports progression.

Anyone who knows the Lincoln event will be aware that the approach to the start/finish line involves an ascent of the fabled Michaelgate, an 11 degree cobbled hill, which in the womens race was tackled eight times! The cream really does rise to the top when faced with this kind of challenge and so it proved as the talented Alice Barnes took top honours for the Drops Cycling Team.

Sunsports girls gave a good showing however with particular praise going to Alice Sharpe who, despite a heavy fall (on her face no less) battled back through the field to finish little more than a minute behind Barnes. Sophie Thackray belied her slight frame to stay within touching distance of the front group until the last lap and looked particularly strong on the steep ascent.  She really is a talent and will surely go from strength to strength judging by this showing. Mads Scott put in a strong performance before tailing off  in the last couple of laps and Jane Hellewell was one of the unluckiest riders of the day when she was taken out by a crash on the very first lap.

Team manager Tony Orrell was pleased with the overall performance and now knows that the team can mix it with the best. He has high ambitions for this venture and the next stop is Motherwell for the first round of the Matrix Tour Series. Backed by some loyal and committed sponsors Sunsport Velo will now have a great opportunity to show their jerseys off to the tv cameras.

There is plenty more to come from this talented squad and I for one am looking forward to following their progress and inevitable rise through the ranks of the peloton

Back in Business!!!

Its been a long time coming but now I can confidently say that Shootthebikerace is back and rearing to go. In its first incarnation I focussed on events I had photographed and stories around these. Again there will be plenty of that but with a heady mixture of interviews, archive stuff, photography items and tests and plenty of reports from across the world of cycling. I will also be championing the new women’s development squad,  Sunsport WRT and will have an ongoing commentary on their season including race reports, interviews and sponsor information. Also look out for the Q and A section (clue, not many cycling related questions)

Above everything else though it will be fun, controversial and occasionally off the wall. It’s a reincarnation and also a start from scratch so I need to build up a following again. Many of you will know me from my cycling events photos and I need you all on board. I will be picking on some of you for interviews and opinions and maybe the odd guest spot. Play ball please. Let’s grow this thing and make it another outlet in which to publicise our sport. Any event I attend will be reported on and all publicity is good publicity. Look out for the first post

The Legend of Kenny Van Vlaminck

My career as a sports photographer has now reached its zenith and i am left asking myself “where do i go from here?”

The reason?

Well the great Kenny Van Vlaminck (KVV!)has chosen one of my photos of himself for his new range of designer apparel. Yes, you heard it correctly. A photo of mine will adorn the front of KVV!’s new range of T Shirts.

For those unfamiliar with the man (and i can’t think that there will be many) KVV! is the legendary Belgian hardman who took the northern classics  by storm in the 90’s. Announcing his arrival on the scene with a spectacular 67th at Fleche Brabanconne in 1992 he followed this up with 11th in 93’s Gent Wevelgem and then to prove these results were neither flukes or career blips inspired by pharmaceutical assistance he stormed to an incredible 19th in the prologue of the 96 Tour of Morocco.

Widely regarded by Belgians as the man Merckx could have been KVV!’s formidable hardman status gained him a reputation throughout Europe that survives to this day. His transition from cyclling great to knowledgable tv pundit has been smooth and natural, organic some might say, and he is bringing to cycle sport what Mick Fleetwood brought to the 1989 Brit Awards.

For Mick and Sam read Kenny and Ned.

If there is  one fly in the ointment in an otherwise flawless Kenny world it is that he has been cursed with the misfortune of bearing an uncanny resemblance to former National Road Race Champion Matt Stephens. The irony really couldn’t be any greater when you consider the staggering gulf in the talent of these two men.

British 4X Series

This weekend i will be making the journey down to Bridgnorth in Shropshire for the 5th round of the Schwalbe British 4X Series. This will be the second of these i have been to this season and for anyone unfamiliar with this type of racing it goes as follows:

Loads of lunatics get on mountain bikes and ride down hill really fast. At some point they fall off usually resulting in some form of injury (being looneys they tend not to notice this fact). For the injured the paramedics bounce across the fields in a land rover. When this is deemed inadequate a proper light flashing woo-woo ambulance also bounces across the fields. Finally a big yellow helicopter appears Apocalypse Now stylee from behind a copse and ferries the injured to the mortuary. This sport is brutal and seriously entertaining. Its like Takeshis Castle on bikes and i confess to having the greatest admiration for the type of folk it attracts. These free spirits hurtle along with little thought for their own life and limb out of sheer competitive gusto.

Its just fabulous and of you happen to be in the vicinity on either Saturday or Sunday (Sunday is National Champs day) then you need to get yourself there

Its Hinault vs Lemond 2

I have to confess to mixed feeling about this years Tour de France. On the one hand i would like to see Sir Bradleyness defend his title but on the other i really think the Froome Dog deserves his teams full support. If you look at this seasons form so far then as far as Sky go it  has got to be all about Froome, but Wiggins is one class athlete and don’t be surprised if he has a go at yellow whilst disregarding team orders.

My gut feeling is that Froome will take the honours as far as Sky are concerned but these two may be so busy neutralising one another that Alberto C. could sneak up and urinate on their potato based fast food.

Whatever happens this will be one intriguing race and has seems to have been the norm these past couple of years the Brits will be in the thick of it.

The Shape of Things to Come

Milan-San Remo proved to be as exciting as ever on Sunday and one particular rider can take great credit for it being so. I have long waved the flag for Ian Stannard and on Sunday he was described by tv as mixing it with the best. WRONG! He was the best. He was certainly the strongest and i think one of the strongest guys the peleton has seen since Sean Yates bashed down the cobbles a generation ago. It can only be a matter of time before he makes a solo break in a prestigious race and gets to the line first. Pity he hasnt got a sprint but then you cant have everything. Watch this space too for Geraint Thomas who i believe is one of the finest talents from our shores ever. Again on the right day this guy will get a biggie.

We are now entering classics season and for the next few weeks the thrills and spills will abound. With the peleton now seemingly a cleaner place the new talent emerging, particularly from the new world and the UK, will have a great chance to grab glory.

By the way Alex Dowsett to Movistar- brilliant move and much glory to come.

Busy Weekend!

IMG_4590I had a very busy weekend following the two wheeled action.

First on Saturday i went to the excellent Hit the North (4) at Phillips Park Prestwich. This is a brutal two hour mtb race all done for charity and included the legendary Nick Craig who went and won it. There were many highlights of the day but i particularly enjoyed seeing the Mayor of Burys Jag get stuck on a particularly gravelly ascent (don’t ask). A crowd formed to assist in the push. Me, i laughed a lot.

The race was run in great weather unlike last year with a field of over 300 and there were some very tired looking folk at the finish

Sunday i was the photographer for the excellent Cheshire Mini Sportive. A field of 650 competitors set off from Poynton Leisure Centre and through the leafy (sort of) lanes of affluent Cheshire on a course of either 30 or 60 miles. The great pleasure in photographing the sportives is that the riders are genuinely having a great time. Most wave, smile and greet you as they bowl past.

The one thing that made both these events possible and indeed highly successful was the hard work and efficiency of the organisers. Both Jason Miles of HTN and Tony Orell of Torelli sport worked like Trojans and not to forget that collectively they ran events with around a thousand competitors all who seemed to enjoy themselves and all who appeared to make it through in one piece. Well done gents!ImageImageImageImage
